Kim Wafer has had the pleasure of working with a number of theater groups in the Capital Region. Some of her favorite roles have been Ruth (Raisin in the Sun), Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Vivian Baptiste (Lesson Before Dying), Mrs. Birling (Inspector Calls), and Della (Greenwood: A Dream Destroyed) to name a few. She is honored and delighted to portray the powerful Shirley Chisholm: the first black woman to be elected to the US Congress and first African American woman to run for the Presidential Candidacy of the US.
SHIRLEY CHISHOLM (1924 - 2005)
“Tremendous amounts of talent are lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt.”
Shirley Chisholm made history as the first African-American woman elected to Congress (1968). Through seven consecutive terms in Congress, she was a passionate advocate for minority rights and urban needs. She staffed her Congressional office entirely with women, half of whom were African-American. Her campaign slogan was “Unbought and Unbossed.”
Chisolm began her career in early childhood education, running a day care center and after retiring from Congress went back to teaching- this time at Mount Holyoke College. When she retired from Congress she remarked, “When I ran for the Congress, when I ran for president, I met more discrimination as a woman than for being black. Men are men.”
