Join Perry Grossman, Senior Staff Attorney of the Voting Rights Project of the New York Civil Liberties Union, for a discussion of voter suppression. New York State, a progressive leader on social issues, has been behind the curve regarding voting rights and policies. New York’s long-standing failure to modernize its election laws has made it a favorite punching bag for politicians seeking to justify voter suppression in places like Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, and Florida.
Despite some forward movement in recent years, New York still has some way to go toward solving inequities in voting and becoming the kind of national leader it aspires to be. (In fact, the most pervasive and pernicious vote dilution and suppression schemes in New York hardly get discussed at all.).
Mr. Grossman will discuss his recent work on state and federal voting rights legislation as well as vote dilution and voter suppression litigation in New York and around the country, among other topics. Learn more about the most significant recent developments in New York election and voter registration law, what still needs to happen, and why it matters both locally and nationally.
