Note from MLK Saratoga: Restorative Justice refers to a philosophy and practice of acknowledging and addressing conflict to prevent harm, as well as acknowledging, addressing, and repairing harm that has occurred. Restorative practices are the building blocks - the foundational principles - of restorative Justice. They help create a positive and inclusive culture in which all voices/opinions are included and acknowledged, making a point to center the voices of those most affected (e.g. centering the voices of the unhoused when discussing where to build a shelter and assessing what services are needed). In this way it is a prevention method: our city council, law enforcement and community could become better equipped to resolve conflict before it escalates (and cause harm). It is also a more humane and relational way to respond when harm is done.
