Meetup: The Roots and Rise of White Nationalism in the USA

Virtual event - Online on Zoom

Consistent with the League of Women Voters’ commitment to an inclusive democracy based on equality of opportunity, a program titled The Roots and Rise of White Nationalism in the USA is offered on Wednesday, February 15 from 7 - 8:30 pm via Zoom.

The program will trace both little known and obvious events along our nation’s path to current challenges with the white supremacy movement. These include slave medicine, reconstruction, race extinction, Jim Crow, lynchings, eugenics, redlining, and voter suppression. It will attempt to answer why systemic racism continues to thrive in our culture, and how we can expose and defeat it as a nation. Participants will be encouraged to confront challenges in our local communities and discuss actions required to secure a humane future based on equality for all.

Mark Long, MPA, has served 38 years in public health programs and human research protection at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Research Oversight in the Department of Veterans Affairs. He and his wife were active in the LWV in Virginia before relocating to the Saratoga Springs area. They are passionate about social justice, volunteering with various community organizations to advocate change.
